Our ginseng products can help support the health of women undergoing menopause.  Read on to learn more about the health benefits of ginseng for menopause.

Menopause is a natural process in a woman’s life when her reproductive hormones decrease, menstrual periods go away, and women can no longer get pregnant (Mayo Clinic, n.d.).  In the United States, the average age of menopause is 51 years.  Levels of the hormones estrogen and progesterone decrease during menopause. As a result, menopause is associated with a variety of symptoms such as irregular periods; hot flashes; chills; sleep problems; changes in mood; and weight gain and metabolic issues.

Ginseng has been used for medicinal purposes to treat a variety of conditions for over 5000 years.  Many scientific studies have investigated the efficacy of ginseng as a treatment option for menopause.  Several randomized, controlled trials have investigated ginseng’s effect compared to placebo in menopausal women.  These studies indicate that ginseng was effective as a therapeutic option (Kim, et al., 2013).

Korean red ginseng was found to improve sexual arousal and global health (Oh, et al., 2010).  Oh and colleagues conducted a study in which 32 menopausal women participated.  The women took three capsules of ginseng (1g each) daily, which, as the researchers found, improved both sexual arousal and overall health.

Korean red ginseng was better than placebo in treating menopause symptoms (Kim, et al., 2012).  In a study by Kim and colleagues, 72 women aged 45 to 60 years, took either 3 grams of red ginseng, or placebo, daily.  The results showed that the Korean red ginseng group had lower cholesterol levels as well as decreased carotid intima-media thickness, which is an indicator of good heart health.  The results indicate that Korean red ginseng may potentially improve markers of cardiovascular health in postmenopausal women.

Korean red ginseng may have a beneficial effect to mitigate depression and improve well-being (Wiklund, et al., 1999).  A study of 384 patients showed that taking ginseng extract was more effective than placebo in improving depression symptoms and boosting well-being and health.
