The Compound That Determines Whether Your Ginseng Actually Works

Ginsenosides are the compounds that make ginseng effective. Not all ginsenosides are as useful as others, however. Nearly 50 distinct ginsenosides have been isolated from the Panax ginseng root. Each one of these has different targets and bioavailability.

Throughout the industry, ginsenosides Rb1 and Rg1 are seen as quality control markers, which makes it important to understand how product formulations differ. With red ginseng, the steaming process partially converts these ginsenosides into more bioactive rare forms. Rb1 and Rg1 are still present, but measuring them alone overlooks the rare ginsenosides that give red ginseng much of its value.

When choosing ginseng products, ginsenoside quality doesn’t depend on just a single number on a label. Many factors come into play.

What Are Ginsenosides? A Plain-Language Explainer

Ginsenosides are the primary compounds found in plants from the Panax genus. They are a type of steroid-like saponins.

They belong to two main structural families. The protopanaxadiol (PPD) type includes compound K and Rb1, Rb2, Rc, Rd, Rg3, and Rh2. These are generally associated with positive metabolic effects in ginseng.*

The protopanaxatriol (PPT) type includes Rg1, Re, Rf, and Rh1. These are associated with immune system function.*

The accumulation of ginsenosides is what determines ginseng quality, but not all countries or regulatory bodies monitor these components in the same way. The Korean Pharmacopoeia monitors four marker compounds while the European Pharmacopoeia monitors eight. Generic supplements, however, only test for Rb1 and Rg1.

Classic Ginsenosides vs. Rare Ginsenosides: The Bioavailability Divide

The body has a tough time absorbing some types of ginsenosides.

Classic Ginsenosides (Rb1, Rg1, Re)

These are the ginsenosides most abundant in ginseng and the ones that you will most often find on labels. They are also some of the most challenging when it comes to bioavailability.

To be better absorbed, ginsenosides need to be converted into their active form during digestion.

Rare/Noble Ginsenosides (Rg1, Rb1, and Rg3): The Red Ginseng Advantage

Rare ginsenosides don’t exist in fresh or white ginseng. They are abundant in black ginseng, however, which is steamed nine times, as well as in red ginseng. The process of steaming converts Rb1 and Rg1 into rarer ginsenosides, which are smaller molecules because they contain fewer sugar chains and are, therefore, absorbed more easily.
